📕 RESOURCE REVIEW — "History Notes English" (Parmar SSC)
File: compulsory-paper-jkas/History Notes English.pdf · 197 pages
Checked against: the 7 completed JKSSB 2026 papers + both FAA papers (2022, 2024)
Reviewed: 30 August 2026
⚖️ THE VERDICT
| Factual accuracy | 🟡 Good, not clean. ~85–90% sound. I found 11 real errors in a 24-page sample, and two of them sit on topics the papers actually asked. |
| Coverage of what IS asked | 🟢 Strong where it overlaps — the Modern / freedom-struggle section is genuinely on-target |
| Proportion of effort | 🔴 Badly wrong. 60% of the pages cover ~8% of the questions. |
| J&K history | 🔴 ZERO. Completely absent — and that is where JKSSB concentrates |
⭐ Use it for Modern Indian History only (pages 159–197). Skim pages 1–119. Get J&K history somewhere else entirely.
1. What this resource actually is
It is a Parmar SSC compilation — an SSC-exam coaching brand. Despite sitting in a compulsory-paper-jkas folder, the content is generic national Indian history, handwritten-style, with no J&K orientation whatsoever.
Structure:
| Era | Pages | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Ancient (Stone Age → Chalcolithic → early kingdoms) | 1–119 | 60% |
| Medieval (Mughals, Marathas, Anglo-Maratha Wars) | 120–158 | 20% |
| Modern (Socio-Religious Reform → 1971) | 159–197 | 20% |
It ends at the 1971 war / Shimla Agreement. Each chapter closes with a "One Liners (from MCQs)" block, which is a genuinely useful feature.
2. 🔴 THE CORE PROBLEM — the proportions are inverted
Here is what the 7 JKSSB papers + 2 FAA papers actually asked in history:
| Category | Questions asked | Pages in these notes |
|---|---|---|
| 🔴 J&K History | 12 | ⭐ 0 pages |
| 🟢 National — Modern / Freedom Struggle | 22 | 39 pages (20%) |
| 🟡 National — Ancient & Medieval | 3 | ⭐ 158 pages (80%) |
The notes devote 158 of 197 pages to a category that produced 3 questions, and 0 pages to the category that produced 12. If you study this document front-to-back, you will spend 80% of your time for roughly 8% of the history marks.
The FAA papers specifically
| Paper | History questions | Type |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | Q12 Freedom-movement chronology · Q28 Dadabhai Naoroji | 🟢 National Modern |
| 2024 | Q13 Praja Sabha (first legislature) · Q30 Dogra dynasty & treaties | 🔴 J&K — not in these notes |
| 2022 | Q19 Shalimar Bagh (Jahangir) · Q30 Amar Mahal (Dogra) | 🔴 J&K — not in these notes |
Of the 6 history-flavoured FAA questions across two papers, these notes help with 2.
3. 🔴 The J&K gap — the single biggest problem
The JKSSB papers ask J&K history constantly, and none of it is here:
| Asked in the papers | In these notes? |
|---|---|
| Rajatarangini dynasty order — Gonanda, Utpala, Karkota, Lohara (asked 3×) | ❌ |
| Kashmir Sultans — Shah Mir, Sikandar Butshikan, Yusuf Shah Chak | ❌ |
| Treaty of Amritsar (1846) · Treaty of Lahore · Gulab Singh | ❌ |
| Battle of Shopian (1819) | ❌ |
| All J&K Muslim Conference (1932) | ❌ |
| Hazrat Bulbul Shah — first Sufi to bring Islam to Kashmir | ❌ |
| Persian chronicles — Baharistan-i-Shahi, Gulabnama, Jonaraja, Kalhana | ❌ |
| Foreign travellers to Kashmir — Ou-Kong, Marco Polo, Bernier, Vigne | ❌ |
| Praja Sabha (FAA 2024 Q13) · Dogra treaties (FAA 2024 Q30) | ❌ |
⭐ Only one crossover: the Fourth Buddhist Council (under Kanishka, in Kashmir) — asked in SF·Q115 and WG·Q78 — is covered by the Ancient section. That is 2 questions out of 158 pages.
4. 🟢 Where the notes genuinely deliver
The Modern section (pp. 159–197) is strong and directly on-target. Confirmed direct hits:
| Paper question | Covered? |
|---|---|
| GD·Q100 — match organisations to founders (Arya Mahila Samaj, Bharat Stree Mahamandal) | ✅ p.161–162, all founders correct |
| GD·Q101 — which statements about Arya Samaj are INCORRECT | ✅ p.163, full profile |
| WG·Q81 — match reform organisations with founders | ✅ p.161–163 |
| IN·Q89 — where did Nana Patil form a Parallel Government | ✅ p.194 — Satara ✓ |
| WG·Q82 — August Offer / Cripps / Wavell / Mountbatten statements | ✅ p.194–195, all four covered |
| IN·Q86 — chronology incl. Self-Respect Movement | ✅ p.162 |
| SF·Q103 / JA·Q46 — Poona Pact, Round Table chronology | ✅ covered in the timeline |
| FAA 2024 Q12 — freedom-movement chronology | ✅ the 1934–1947 timeline is well built |
Verified-correct sample (spot-checked against standard sources): Arya Samaj 1875 · Dayanand's original name Mool Shankar · Satyarth Prakash · DAV College 1886 Lahore · 1893 College/Mahatma split · Satyashodhak Samaj 1873 · Savitribai Phule first female teacher · Prarthana Samaj 1867 · Atmiya Sabha 1814 · title "Raja" from Akbar II · Brahmo Sabha 1828 · Tattvabodhini 1839 · Sadharan Brahmo Samaj 1878 · Dharma Sabha 1830 Radhakant Deb · Age of Consent Act 1891 · Sarda Act 1930 (18/14) · Macaulay's Minute 1835 · Wood's Despatch 1854 "Magna Carta of Indian Education" · Mahad Satyagraha 1927 · Third Panipat 1761 · Treaty of Salbai 1782 · Treaty of Bassein 1802 · Bose died 18 Aug 1945 · Rajagopalachari last Governor-General.
5. ⚠️ ACCURACY AUDIT — 11 errors found
I read ~24 of 197 pages (Ancient pp.1–6, Medieval pp.120–121 & 156–159, Modern pp.160–163 & 193–197). At the rate below (~11 errors in 24 pages), the full document plausibly contains 60–90 errors. Treat every date as "probably right, worth a second source."
🔴 Serious — these sit on topics the papers ask
| # | Page | The notes say | ✅ Correct |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 196 | "June 1947: Indian Independence Act 1947" | The Act received Royal Assent on 18 July 1947. June 1947 was the Mountbatten (3 June) Plan — a different thing. ⚠️ IN·Q90 asked this exact date. |
| 2 | 196 | "'Calcutta Killings' at Noakhali, Calcutta" | Two separate events mashed together. Direct Action Day / Great Calcutta Killings = Calcutta, 16 Aug 1946. Noakhali = East Bengal, riots in October 1946. Gandhi was in Calcutta on 15 Aug 1947. |
| 3 | 158 | "Shivaji killed Adil Shah in Battle of Pratapgarh" | Shivaji killed Afzal Khan at Pratapgarh (1659). Afzal Khan was a general OF Adil Shah (Sultan of Bijapur). Adil Shah was not killed by Shivaji. |
| 4 | 195 | "Aruna Asaf Ali presided over Congress Working Committee" | She hoisted the flag at Gowalia Tank. She did not preside over the CWC. |
| 5 | 197 | "Drafting of Constitution of India by Nehru in 1928" | This is the Nehru Report, drafted by MOTILAL Nehru, not Jawaharlal. |
🟠 Moderate
| # | Page | The notes say | ✅ Correct |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 | 196 | "HMS Talwar, 14 Feb 1946" | HMIS Talwar, and the Royal Indian Navy mutiny began 18 February 1946. |
| 7 | 195 | "Women regiment formed: Rani Lakshmibai" | The INA unit was the Rani of Jhansi Regiment — named after her; it was led by Capt. Lakshmi Sahgal. |
| 8 | 196 | "1st INA trial against Prem Kumar, Sehgal Shah Nawaz Khan…" | Garbled. The three accused were Prem Kumar Sahgal, Shah Nawaz Khan, Gurbaksh Singh Dhillon. |
| 9 | 121 | Babur "calls themselves as Uzbek" | Babur identified as a Turk / Timurid. The Uzbeks were his enemies (Shaibani Khan drove him from Samarkand). |
| 10 | 160 | Widow Remarriage Act 1856 under Dalhousie | Passed 26 July 1856, by which time Canning was Governor-General (Dalhousie left in Feb 1856). Coaching books often say Dalhousie; know both. |
🟡 Minor / internal inconsistency
| # | Page | Issue |
|---|---|---|
| 11 | 2 vs 4 | Stone Age dates contradict themselves. p.2 chart: Mesolithic 9,000–4,000 BC, Neolithic 7,000–1000 BC. p.4: Mesolithic 8000–4000 BC, Neolithic "7000 BC–10,000 BC" — that last range is written backwards (10,000 BC is earlier than 7000 BC). |
| — | 3 | "Earth: 4000 Million years old" — actual ≈ 4,540 million years. |
| — | 158 | "Treaty of Madeshwar" → Mandsaur (1818, with Holkar). |
| — | 196 | "Pathic Lawrence" → Pethick-Lawrence. |
| — | 195 | "Gowalika Tank" → Gowalia Tank. |
| — | 193 | Forward Bloc "1939, in Unnao, UP" — founded in Calcutta, June 1939; Unnao was a later conference. Verify before relying on it. |
| — | 160 | D. K. Karve appears next to Abolition of Sati. He belongs to widow remarriage and women's education (founded SNDT). The arrow layout is ambiguous. |
6. 📋 HOW TO USE THIS RESOURCE
Read pages 159–197 properly. Skim pages 1–158. Do not study them line by line.
| Pages | Content | What to do | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| 159–197 | 🟢 Modern / Freedom Struggle | ⭐ Study properly. This is 22 of the 25 national-history questions. | 6–8 hrs |
| 120–158 | 🟡 Mughals, Marathas | Skim the "One Liners" blocks only. Learn rulers, key battles, key treaties. | 1.5 hrs |
| 1–119 | 🟡 Ancient | ⭐ Read only the "One Liners" at each chapter end + the Buddhist Councils table (WG·Q78, SF·Q115 asked it). | 1.5 hrs |
Total: ~10 hours, not the 40+ that reading it cover-to-cover would take.
❗ What you must get elsewhere
J&K history is the highest-yield history topic on this exam and this document has none of it. Use instead:
- JK-GK — Question-Bank sections 5 & 6, which already hold 12 J&K history PYQs with answers
- _MOC-JK-GK and the
FAA-JK-GK-NOTES/lecture notes - Priority J&K topics: Rajatarangini dynasty order · Kashmir Sultans · Treaty of Amritsar 1846 · Dogra rulers · Praja Sabha · Persian chronicles · foreign travellers
🎯 BOTTOM LINE
Are these notes reliable?
As a factual source — mostly yes, with reservations. ~85–90% accurate. The Modern section is well organised and its coverage of reform movements and the freedom struggle maps directly onto questions that have actually been asked. But I found 11 errors in a 24-page sample, including two on topics the papers tested, so never treat a single date here as final — cross-check anything you are memorising.
As a study plan — no. The proportions are inverted for this exam. It is an SSC document, and SSC weights Ancient India far more heavily than JKSSB does.
The fatal gap is J&K history — 12 questions across the papers, zero pages here.
⭐ Use it as a Modern-Indian-History reference. Do not let it set your study priorities, and do not let it be your only history source.
