Exam Strategy Note

  • Relevant for both JKSSB and JKPSC.
  • JKPSC: expect statement-based questions (2–4 statements, identify correct/incorrect) → focus on understanding trends, not just memorizing numbers.

  • Don't try to memorize every number — focus on the trend (which season/month is hottest, coldest, wettest, driest) — that's what's actually tested.

1. Climate vs Weather — Core Concepts

Definitions

  • Weather = meteorological conditions (temperature, humidity, pressure, wind, precipitation) at a given moment/short period.
  • Climate = the average weather pattern of a region over a long period (typically last 30 years).

Why Jammu ≠ Kashmir ≠ Ladakh in climate despite similar region

  • Ladakh & Kashmir are at similar altitude, but Ladakh gets far less rain (rain-shadow effect).
  • Jammu is more humid & hotter (lower altitude, plains) than Kashmir Valley.
  • Altitude is the single biggest reason J&K's three regions differ so much despite being close together.

Why temperature varies by latitude Sun's rays are perpendicular over the equator (twice/year) and each Tropic (once/year each). Perpendicular rays = more concentrated heat = hotter. Near poles, rays are always slanting = spread out = colder.
Where does J&K fall?

  • India (& J&K) lies mostly in the Subtropical Zone → hence India's climate = Subtropical Monsoon type
  • But altitude modifies this within J&K — mountainous Kashmir behaves more like a Temperate zone despite being in a subtropical latitude.

Why Kashmir isn't subtropical despite subtropical latitude Because of high altitude, Kashmir's climate resembles the temperate latitudes rather than the subtropical latitude it geographically sits in. Same logic applies more extremely to Ladakh (polar-like due to extreme altitude).

  • Subtropical → because of its latitudinal location
  • Monsoon → because rainfall is caused by monsoon winds

5. 🔵 CLIMATE OF KASHMIR (Continental / Temperate Type)

Why Kashmir's climate differs so much from India's Pir Panjal Range blocks the monsoon winds from crossing into the Kashmir Valley (unlike the lower Shivaliks, which monsoon winds can cross easily). This is the key reason Kashmir's climate is distinct from mainland India/Jammu.

  • Hailstorms occur in April–May (unlike Jammu, where hail occurs in winter) — can severely damage apple crops (e.g., Kulgam hailstorm, May 5 — mentioned as a real example)

6. 🟢 CLIMATE OF LADAKH (Arctic Cold Desert Type)

Key Facts

  • Climate type: Arctic + Desert (cold, arid)
  • Very cold in winter, arid (very little rainfall) — hence called a "Cold Desert"
  • Reason for aridity: Ladakh lies in the RAIN SHADOW of the Himalayas (Greater Himalayas block moisture-laden monsoon winds)

Standard climate data for Leh shows the warmest month is July (mean max ≈ 25 °C; the coldest is January). March in Leh is still cold (mean max ≈ 8–9 °C). Your own note is even self-contradictory — it says "March 25.3 °C" and "mean max in July ~25 °C". This "March = hottest" line is a repeated coaching claim but conflicts with actual meteorological data — cross-check your source before treating it as a fact. (Coldest = January is correct.)

Why "Arctic Desert"?

  • Arctic → because winters resemble polar-cold regions (like Siberia, Greenland: -20 to -30°C)
  • Desert → because rainfall is extremely low (arid conditions)
