- JKPSC: expect statement-based questions (2–4 statements, identify correct/incorrect) → focus on understanding trends, not just memorizing numbers.
- JKSSB: expect direct/basic factual questions (e.g., "hottest month in Kashmir Valley?").
- Don't try to memorize every number — focus on the trend (which season/month is hottest, coldest, wettest, driest) — that's what's actually tested.
1. Climate vs Weather — Core Concepts
- Weather = meteorological conditions (temperature, humidity, pressure, wind, precipitation) at a given moment/short period.
- Climate = the average weather pattern of a region over a long period (typically last 30 years).
Factors Affecting Climate of a Region

- Altitude is the single biggest reason J&K's three regions differ so much despite being close together.

- Subtropical Zone = 5° above and 5° below each Tropic
- India (& J&K) lies mostly in the Subtropical Zone → hence India's climate = Subtropical Monsoon type
- But altitude modifies this within J&K — mountainous Kashmir behaves more like a Temperate zone despite being in a subtropical latitude.

Winter Rainfall Pattern (Important Trend)

- Rain returns in Jan–Feb–Mar due to Western Disturbances
- Total winter rainfall ≈ 13 cm
☀️ Summer Season (Mar–Jun)
- Temperature rises sharply from March (mean ~18°C) onward
- Hottest month: June ⭐ — mean max temp reaches ~43°C
- Humidity is low in Apr–Jun (before monsoon); rises to ~70% once monsoon arrives (Jul–Sep)

- Wettest months: July & August ⭐ (July = 41 cm, August = 35 cm)
- July is THE wettest month overall in Jammu
- ~70–75% of total annual rainfall occurs in July–August combined
- Humidity rises to ~85%; temp still stays around 35°C — described as very "cruel"/uncomfortable weather (high heat + high humidity)

- Snowfall (Dec–Feb): ~120 cm total, of which ~40% (≈50 cm) falls in January alone
- The mean maximum and mean minimum temperatures in November read about 14°C and 1.5°C, dropping down to 8°C and −1.4°C in December.
🎿 Chillai Kalan & Related Periods (Important — Asked in Exams!)

🌸 Spring Season — "Sonth" (March – mid-May)
- Local Kashmiri name: Sonth
- Temperature rises gradually; snow starts melting
- March receives the MAXIMUM rainfall in Kashmir ⭐ (~12.1 cm) — due to Western Disturbances
- Mean max temp: March ~14°C → April ~20°C → May ~25°C
- 30–40% of Kashmir's total annual rainfall occurs in spring
- Hailstorms occur in April–May (unlike Jammu, where hail occurs in winter) — can severely damage apple crops (e.g., Kulgam hailstorm, May 5 — mentioned as a real example)
- Valley is in full bloom — apple, almond blossoms
- Agricultural activity resumes (suspended since winter)
☀️ Summer Season (May – September)
- Hottest month: July ⭐ (NOT June, unlike Jammu!) — mean max temp ~27°C
- Temperature range: up to ~30°C
- Rainfall is LOW here — less than 25% of annual rainfall occurs in summer
- Reason: Pir Panjal blocks monsoon winds from reaching the Valley
- Jammu → June (43°C)

🍂 Autumn Season — "Harud" (September – October)
- Transitional season between summer and winter — 2 months
- Least disturbed weather = clearest skies, least rainfall
- Least rainfall of the year occurs here (~2.8–3.3 cm in Sep/Oct)
- Harvest season — rice, saffron, apple harvested
- Firewood collection for winter (Jaloon) traditionally begins
- Popular tourist season due to pleasant, clear weather
- Mean temp ~25°C

6. 🟢 CLIMATE OF LADAKH (Arctic Cold Desert Type)
- Climate type: Arctic + Desert (cold, arid)
- Very cold in winter, arid (very little rainfall) — hence called a "Cold Desert"
- Reason for aridity: Ladakh lies in the RAIN SHADOW of the Himalayas (Greater Himalayas block moisture-laden monsoon winds)
- Among the least rainfall areas in India (alongside Jaisalmer, Rajasthan)

Standard climate data for Leh shows the warmest month is July (mean max ≈ 25 °C; the coldest is January). March in Leh is still cold (mean max ≈ 8–9 °C). Your own note is even self-contradictory — it says "March 25.3 °C" and "mean max in July ~25 °C". This "March = hottest" line is a repeated coaching claim but conflicts with actual meteorological data — cross-check your source before treating it as a fact. (Coldest = January is correct.)
Why "Arctic Desert"?
- Arctic → because winters resemble polar-cold regions (like Siberia, Greenland: -20 to -30°C)
- Desert → because rainfall is extremely low (arid conditions)

- Land has lower specific heat than water (extremes over land) → Laboratory-Attendant Q70. For JKSSB, expect direct factual climate questions (hottest/coldest month); for JKPSC, statement-based.
8. 🌧️ Rainfall Distribution Across J&K
- J&K average annual rainfall: ~100–113 cm
- Rank by rainfall (highest → lowest): Jammu > Kashmir > Ladakh
- Reason: Jammu gets monsoon rain, which neither Kashmir nor Ladakh fully receives (blocked by Pir Panjal & Himalayas respectively)
- Biggest snowfall period (Valley): January & February, with January highest
