About this lecture Third lecture of the GK of Jammu & Kashmir series by Tawqeer Sir (EACET Classes). Topic: Rivers of Jammu & Kashmir (including Ladakh). Useful for JKSSB (VLW, Panchayat Secretary, Veterinary Pharmacist, Sub Inspector Finance) and JKPSC exams.

1. Basic River Concepts (Recap)

Key Terms

  • Source = point of origin of a river (lake, glacier, spring, etc.)
  • Tributary = smaller stream/river that joins the main river
  • Mouth = where the river ends (lake, sea, or ocean)
Exam Tip JKSSB/JKPSC frequently ask: "X is a tributary of which river?" or "Where does river X originate?" — Focus on memorizing source → path → mouth for each major river.

2. 🗺️ Mind Map — Overview of Main Rivers of J&K/Ladakh

4.2 Canals of Kashmir

Two Types of Canals

  1. Zamindari Canals (locally called "Kul"/"Kol") — built & maintained by local farmers/landlords; 60%+ of Kashmir's irrigated area depends on these; 3000+ kuls exist (network resembles a labyrinth/table pattern)
  2. Government-Constructed Canals — built and maintained by the government
"Ravdar" / "Ravik" — Village Watchmen Historically, villages appointed water-watchmen called "Ravik" to ensure fair distribution of water from these kuls and prevent hoarding/theft, especially in water-scarce areas. Ravik committees still exist in some water-scarce parts of Kashmir today.

Major Government Canals

CanalOrigin RiverBuilt ByKey Facts
Martand CanalLidder River (from Ganeshpur)Raja Lalitaditya (Karkota dynasty), 8th century ADOldest canal of Kashmir; length ~50 km; irrigates Anantnag/Martand area; ends at Martand Karewa

5. 🟢 RIVERS OF LADAKH REGION

5.1 Indus River ⭐ (Main river of Ladakh)

Quick Facts

  • Source: Singhi Khamban Glacier, near Lake Mansarovar, Kailash Range, Tibet
  • Total length: ~2900 km (some sources: 3180 km)
  • Within India (Ladakh): ~79 km (or ~1114 km if Pakistan-Administered Kashmir portion is included — 2 different figures depending on scope)
  • Largest river of Pakistan
  • Mouth: Arabian Sea, near Karachi

Path

Tibet (Mansarovar) → Ladakh (flows between Ladakh Range and Zanskar Range) → Leh (located on its banks) → Gilgit-Baltistan → bends at AttockPakistan → Arabian Sea

Leh's location Leh town is situated on the banks of the Indus, in the valley between Ladakh Range (north) and Zanskar Range (south) — the Upper Indus Valley.

Tributaries of Indus

Right Bank Tributaries: Shyok, Nubra, Gilgit, Hunza (Huza), Kabul (from Afghanistan)

Left Bank Tributaries: Zanskar, Suru, Yapola, Astor

Other minor tributaries (mentioned but not exam-critical) Goma, Shigar, Sohan, Khurramgar, Gizashagar, Tanuwal

Left Bank Tributaries — Detail

TributaryDetails
Suru RiverOrigin: Drung-Drung Glacier, near Pensi La Pass (Zanskar Range); Kargil town is on its banks; obsequent tributary of Indus (flows opposite direction to main river); other names: Karachi River, "River of Lahore" (note: check — likely local naming); length 1885 km (likely too long for a J&K river — verify); tributary: Dras River (from Machoi Glacier near Zojila Pass), which itself has tributary Shingo River; also Shafat Nala
Zanskar RiverNorth-flowing; formed by confluence of Doda River (a.k.a. Stod River, from glacier near Pensi La) and Tsarap/Sharap River
Corrections — Suru River row (your own ⚠️ notes were right)

  • Length ≈ 185 km, not 1885 km (that's a typo — the Suru is a short Ladakh river).
  • "River of Lahore" / "Karachi River" is wrong for the Suru — "River of Lahore" is a nickname of the Ravi. Drop these alternate names for the Suru.
  • Indus within India ≈ 700+ km through Ladakh — the "~79 km" figure is not reliable; treat exact figures loosely.

Right Bank Tributaries — Detail

TributaryDetails
Shyok River ("River of Sorrow"/"River of Death")Origin: Rimo Glacier, Depsang Plains; joins Indus near Nubra; also called Siachen Nala
Nubra RiverTributary of Shyok; originates from Siachen Glacier(important — asked which river originates from Siachen Glacier)
Galwan RiverTributary of Shyok; from Samjungling Glacier; named after Ghulam Rasool Galwan (Indian Army/expedition guide); associated with Galwan Valley
Chuppi River ("Quiet River")Tributary of Shyok; originates in Aksai Chin, eastern edge of Depsang Plains
Gilgit RiverRight bank tributary; joins Indus in Gilgit-Baltistan region (near Hunza Valley)

Hydropower Projects in Ladakh

Dumkhar, Stakna, Nimoo-Bazgo (on Indus); Chutak (on Suru River, Kargil); Igbal/Kargil Hydro Power Project (on Wakha River, a tributary of Indus)

5.2 Canals of Ladakh

Quick Facts

  • Locally called "Yura/Mayur" (peacock)
  • Chushot Mayur Canal — built on left bank of Indus
  • Thiksey Mayur Canal — built on right bank of Indus

6. 🚜 Canals of Jammu Division

Why canals were needed Main rivers (Chenab, Ujh, Basantar, Tawi) couldn't naturally irrigate the entire Jammu division, so canals were built to distribute water to agricultural fields.
CanalSource River & BankBuilt/Key Facts
Ranbir CanalLeft bank of Chenab, from AkhnoorLargest; crosses Tawi River via an aqueduct; irrigates RS Pura/Ranbir Singh Pura (high-yield rice & wheat); command area ~1 lakh (100,000) acres/sq units
Pratap CanalRight bank of Chenab, from AkhnoorLength ~36 km; command area ~20,000 (smaller than Ranbir)
Ravi-Tawi Irrigation ComplexCombines Ravi + TawiMajor project; irrigates 1.5+ lakh acres, especially the water-scarce Kandi Belt area
Ravi Canal (sub-project)Right bank of RaviFlows NE direction; length 76 km; connects with Tawi Lift Irrigation Project
Tawi Lift Irrigation Project (sub-project)Left bank of Tawi, near Bahu Fort, JammuWater lifted ~31 meters via lift pumps; length 29 km; connects to Ramgarh area; command area ~15,000; irrigates Jammu, Vijaypur areas
